Inaccurate cycle helmet test circulating

A French consumers group, UFC Que Choisir, has conducted tests on the shock absorbing capacity of several traditional cycle helmets and Hövding. The test method used for Hövding was not applicable and therefore resulted in inaccurate test results. The report containing the test results was distributed before it could be stopped.

The test method used in the French test on Hövding was not applicable because it is based on the assumption that Hövding detects accidents by a mechanical shock to the product. For assessment of the Hövding algorithm and trigger mechanism, real accident situations must be staged. The algorithm triggers the airbag based on movement patterns of cyclists in real accident situations and therefore will not function correctly if it is dropped straight onto a surface in a rig – which was the method used in the French test. Both Hövding and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, an accredited body for CE marking of cycle helmets, informed UFC Que Choisir that the test method was not applicable for the Hövding airbag cycle helmet in time before publication.

”It is very important that when the accident indication and activation characteristics of Hövding is evaluated you must simulate an accident in order to let the accident detection system work as intended. I cannot see that you have done that in your tests.”
- Klas-Gustav Andersson, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden

Hövding is CE marked by SP in accordance with the PPE Directive for Personal Protective Equipment. This means that the Hövding meets at least the same requirements as those laid down on traditional cycle helmets. Independent, correctly conducted tests show that Hövding has a shock absorbing capacity that is superior to all other cycle helmets.

In the Swedish insurance company Folksam’s cycle helmet test in 2012, Hövding proved to have more than three times better shock absorbing capacity than the best traditional helmet. They conducted an impact test in which all the traditional helmets achieved around 250 g, compared to Hövding, which recorded only 65 g. The lower the value, the better the helmet’s ability to protect the cyclist’s head in an accident. With a traditional cycle helmet in this type of accident, the probability of a severe head injury is arbout 90 %, with a 30 % risk of a fatal injury. For a cyclist wearing Hövding in the same accident, the risk of injury is dramatically reduced. The risk of a severe head injury is then only 2 % and the risk of a fatal injury is almost non-existent.

Hövding is a revolutionary cycle helmet designed as a collar that you wear around your neck. The collar contains an airbag that will inflate and protect th ehead in the event of an accident.

Hövding contains sensors that are constantly monitoring the cyclist’s movements when it is switched on. The sensors detect any changes in velocity or angle of the cyclist and can distinguish between normal cycling and accidents.

In an accident, Hövding detects the abnormal movement pattern and triggers the airbag to inflate. The inflation takes a tenth of a second (0.1 seconds) and the airbag is fully inflated before head impact

Behind the product lie seven years of development, in partnership with experts on cycling head injuries, airbag technology, mathematics and crash tests.

Most common questions

  • What (neck) size Hövding should I choose?

Small is recommended for measurements up to 36 cm (14 inches) around your neck. Medium is recommended for measurements between 34-42 cm (13-16 1/2 inches) around your neck. If your neck measures more than 42 cm (16 1/2 inches), you are going to have to wait for our size Large Hövding.

If your neck measurement is between 34-36 cm (13 to 14 inches):
Choose Small if you have a long neck, and/or prefer a tight-fitting collar
Choose Medium if you have a short neck and/or prefer a loose-fitting collar.

  • Do I have to restrict my movements when I’m wearing Hövding so the airbag isn’t triggered by mistake?

There is an on/off switch on the zip tag that activates Hövding when it’s attached to the right-hand side of the collar. Similarly, Hövding is turned off when you unclip the on/off button. When Hövding is switched off, the airbag can’t inflate.

Only switch your Hövding on once you are wearing it, immediately before going out on your bike. You can move exactly the same way you usually do when you’re cycling. The airbag won’t inflate unless you’re in an accident. See also How Hövding works.

  • Can I use Hövding on a moped, on skis, in a car, on a skateboard, with inline skates, etc.?

No. Hövding is only designed for cycling.

  • Can children wear Hövding?

No. Hövding has a lower age limit of 15.

  • Can I still use my Hövding once the airbag has been triggered?

If your Hövding has been in an accident, it can’t be used again.

If your Hövding has been deployed, please contact us. In some cases, the accident data recorded in the black box inside the collar can be interesting and valuable to us in our on-going development work.

Some insurance companies cover part of the expense of a new Hövding after you have had an accident. Contact your insurance company to hear how they handle your case.

  • Will my insurance pay for a new Hövding?

Most insurance companies will cover the cost of a new Hövding (minus the excess) after an accident through your home contents insurance. Contact your insurance company to check how they would deal with your case.

  • Can I ship my Hövding by airplane?

You can´t bring Hövding on an airplane or send it as air cargo without permission from the airline/shipment company. From January 1st 2015 you are allowed to transport Hövding by airplane, either in your hand luggage or check-in luggage.

Choose your size

  • What head size does Hövding fit?

(Measure around your head horizontally from the centre of your forehead, where your head is widest) 52 - 59 cm (20 1/2 - 23 inches).

  • How do I know I’ve got the right size for my neck and my head?

As far as performance/safety goes, it doesn’t matter whether your Hövding is a tight or a loose fit around your neck. Small and Medium are both designed for the same range of head sizes: 52 - 59 cm (20 1/2 - 23 inches) in circumference. Choose the size that feels most comfortable for you.

  • What (neck) size Hövding should I choose?

Wearing Hövding

Hairstyles, hats, scarves, etc

Hairstyles

  • Does it matter what sort of hairstyle I have when I’m wearing my Hövding?

Most hairstyles work perfectly with Hövding. However, very bulky, rigid and heavy hairstyles can get in the way and may impede the airbag inflating around the head. By “impede”, we mean it might take longer for the airbag to attain the right position around the head, or it might not reach all the way over the forehead. The following hairstyles are no problem:
Short hair - Bob - Long, flowing hair - Ponytail - Braids - French twist, bun and other small hairdos

If you’re not sure about a particular hairstyle, text or e-mail us a photo and we’ll be happy to advise! See Contact us for our contact details.

  • I have a mohawk, will that work with Hövding?

If your mohawk is very rigid, it might interfere with the inflation of the airbag. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which means that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead. If your hair isn’t too rigid, it shouldn’t be a problem.

  • I have an afro, will that work with Hövding?

A very big afro can get in the way of correct inflation. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which means that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead. Contact our customer services if you’re wondering about your afro in particular.

  • I have dreadlocks, will they work with Hövding?

In some cases, yes. Place your dreads inside the Hövding collar and measure your neck and your dreads with a tape measure. If your neck including your dreads has a circumference less than 42 cm (16 1/2 inches), there’s no problem wearing Hövding. But always keep your dreadlocks inside the collar when you’re cycling. If the circumference is bigger than 42 cm, your dreadlocks are too big for you to be able to wear Hövding. Big, loose dreadlocks that don’t fit inside the collar are too heavy for the airbag to push out of the way so it can’t position itself correctly around your head. A knot of dreadlocks high on top of your head will take up the space that your head should take up in the inflated airbag. This means you’d be protecting your dreadlocks instead of your head.

Hats, etc.

  • Can I wear a hat or other headgear while using Hövding?

Most hats and headgear work perfectly with Hövding. However, very bulky and heavy headgear can get in the way and may impede the airbag inflating around the head. By “impede”, we mean it might take longer for the airbag to attain the right position around the head, or it might not reach all the way over the forehead. The following hats and headgear aren’t a problem:
Cap - Hat with or without a brim - Knitted hat with or without a bobble - Veil: Wear your Hövding on top.

If you’re not sure about a particular hat or kind of headgear, text or e-mail us a photo and we’ll be happy to advise! See Contact us for our contact details.

  • Can I wear a sweater or jacket with a hood together with Hövding?

If you’ve got the hood over your head, put your Hövding on top of it. You can’t wear the hood over your head outside the collar.

  • Can I wear a fur hat/hat with earflaps together with Hövding?

If it’s too big, it can get in the way of correct inflation. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which means that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead.

  • Can I wear a turban with Hövding?

If it’s too big, it can get in the way of correct inflation. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which mean that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead.

  • Can I wear an ordinary cycle helmet or other head protection with Hövding?

    No.

Miscellaneous

  • I wear glasses, is that ok with Hövding?

    Yes.

  • What about shawls and scarves, can you wear them inside/outside the collar?

When the airbag is triggered, the pressure from the airbag splits open the upper seam of the collar, allowing the hood to inflate around your head. This means it’s important that you keep the area above this seam free and don’t cover it with a scarf or similar on top. But you can still wear a shawl or a scarf outside or inside your Hövding.

  • I often wear earrings, is that ok with Hövding?

Small earrings, such as studs, pearls etc. are fine. However, if you have big, dangly earrings, we recommend taking them off while you are cycling. Otherwise there’s a risk that they will fly off if they are hit by the airbag when it inflates around your head. Big rings in your ears where the ends are joined together can be hit by the airbag if it inflates and may hurt. So it’s better to take them off when you’re cycling.

  • Can I use headphones with Hövding?

Yes. Though you need to make sure they aren’t down round your neck over the seam that splits when the airbag inflates.

Battery and charging

  • How long does the battery last?

When it’s switched on, the battery life is approximately 18 hours. When it’s switched off, it’s about 36 days. Example: If you cycle for 30 minutes a day, you’ll need to charge the battery about every six weeks.

  • How long does it take to charge Hövding?

It takes about six hours to charge the battery completely.

  • How do I switch Hövding on and off?

Hövding is switched on and off using the zip at the front of the collar. There is an on/off button on the zip tag. Pull up the zip and clip the on/off button to the collar to turn Hövding on. Turn it off by unclipping the on/off button.

  • How do I know whether Hövding is on?

You’ll hear a sound and LEDs light up at the front of the collar to tell you that Hövding is switched on. When you turn Hövding off, you’ll hear a different sound and the LEDs will go out.

  • How do I know if the battery is low?

Hövding starts to make a specific noise about an hour before the battery runs out.
