Most common questions

  • What (neck) size Hövding should I choose?

Hövding is available in three collar sizes: Small (S), Medium (M) and Large (L). In terms of operation, it makes no difference whether your Hövding is tight or loose around your neck. The collar sizes that are currently available (S, M, L) are adapted to the same head size range: 52-59 cm in circumference. Choose the size that feels best.

Small is recommended for neck sizes of less than 36 cm.

Medium is recommended for neck sizes of 34–42 cm.

Large is recommended for neck sizes of 38–45 cm.

  • Do I have to restrict my movements when I’m wearing Hövding so the airbag isn’t triggered by mistake?

There is an on/off switch on the zip tag that activates Hövding when it's attached to the right-hand side of the collar. Similarly, Hövding is turned off when you unclip the on/off button. When Hövding is switched off, the airbag can't inflate.

Only have your Hövding switched on when cycling. Your Hövding is designed to protect you while cyclingand it must, therefore, be switched off when you are not cycling. You can move exactly the same way you usually do when you're cycling.

  • Can I use Hövding on a moped, on skis, in a car, on a skateboard, with inline skates, etc.?

No. Hövding is only designed for cycling.

  • Can children wear Hövding?

No. Hövding has a lower age limit of 15.

  • Can I still use my Hövding once the airbag has been triggered?

If your Hövding has been in an accident, it can't be used again.

If your Hövding has been deployed, please contact us. In some cases, the accident data recorded in the black box inside the collar can be interesting and valuable to us in our on-going development work.

Some insurance companies cover part of the expense of a new Hövding after you have had an accident. Contact your insurance company to hear how they handle your case. Some countries have a crash replacement program, ask your retailer for more information.

  • Will my insurance pay for a new Hövding?

Some insurance companies will cover the cost of a new Hövding (minus the excess) after an accident through your home contents insurance. Contact your insurance company to check how they would deal with your case.
In most countries there is a Crash Replacement Program that offers a discount, ask your retailer for more information.

  • Can I bring my Hövding onboard an aircraft?

Bringing Hövding as hand luggage or checked luggage on flights

Hövding conforms to the specification for Avalanche rescue backpacks which are generally permitted aboard an aircraft according to the regulations by IATA (International Air Transport Association). However, a permission from the airline is required.

You have to inform the airline about the Hövding and show the Hövding Self-inflating Bicycle Helmet Data Sheet which describes the content of the gas cartridge and the trigger before booking your flight. Please print Table 2.3.A from the IATA table and the Data Sheet and present them together with your Hövding at the security checkpoint.

Traveling to or from the United States

If you are traveling to or from North America, the US American Transportation Administration (TSA) will not allow the Hövding onboard as it contains a pressurized cylinder. This general rule also apply to travelers who change flights in the United States.

Please note that if you have Windows 8 or 8.1, you cannot charge your Hövding in your computer due to a change in USB management.

  • Can I use it when riding any bike?

Hövding is designed for standard bike models and for mini bicycles and folding bikes.

Wearing Hövding

Hairstyles, hats, scarves, etc

  • Hairstyles
  • Does it matter what sort of hairstyle I have when I’m wearing my Hövding?

Most hairstyles work perfectly with Hövding. However, very bulky, rigid and heavy hairstyles can get in the way and may impede the airbag inflating around the head. By “impede", we mean it might take longer for the airbag to attain the right position around the head, or it might not reach all the way over the forehead. The following hairstyles are no problem:

Short hair - Bob - Long, flowing hair - Ponytail - Braids - French twist, bun and other small hairdos

If you're not sure about a particular hairstyle, text or e-mail us a photo and we'll be happy to advise! See Contact us for our contact details.

  • I have a mohawk, will that work with Hövding?

If your mohawk is very rigid, it might interfere with the inflation of the airbag. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which means that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead. If your hair isn't too rigid, it shouldn't be a problem.

  • I have an afro, will that work with Hövding?

A very big afro can get in the way of correct inflation. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which means that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead. Contact our customer services if you're wondering about your afro in particular.

  • I have dreadlocks, will they work with Hövding?

In some cases, yes. Place your dreads inside the Hövding collar and measure your neck and your dreads with a tape measure. If your neck including your dreads has a circumference less than 42 cm (16 1/2 inches), there's no problem wearing Hövding. But always keep your dreadlocks inside the collar when you're cycling. If the circumference is bigger than 42 cm, your dreadlocks are too big for you to be able to wear Hövding. Big, loose dreadlocks that don't fit inside the collar are too heavy for the airbag to push out of the way so it can't position itself correctly around your head. A knot of dreadlocks high on top of your head will take up the space that your head should take up in the inflated airbag. This means you'd be protecting your dreadlocks instead of your head.

  • Hats, etc.
  • Can I wear a hat or other headgear while using Hövding?

Most hats and headgear work perfectly with Hövding. However, very bulky and heavy headgear can get in the way and may impede the airbag inflating around the head. By “impede”, we mean it might take longer for the airbag to attain the right position around the head, or it might not reach all the way over the forehead. The following hats and headgear aren’t a problem:

Cap - Hat with or without a brim - Knitted hat with or without a bobble - Veil: Wear your Hövding on top.

If you’re not sure about a particular hat or kind of headgear, text or e-mail us a photo and we’ll be happy to advise! See Contact us for our contact details.

  • Can I wear a sweater or jacket with a hood together with Hövding?

If you’ve got the hood over your head, put your Hövding on top of it. You can’t wear the hood over your head outside the collar.

  • Can I wear a fur hat/hat with earflaps together with Hövding?

If it’s too big, it can get in the way of correct inflation. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which means that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead.

  • Can I wear a turban with Hövding?

If it’s too big, it can get in the way of correct inflation. The airbag will inflate around the head, but might have problems positioning correctly – which mean that it might not reach as far over the head and so not protect the entire forehead.

  • Can I wear an ordinary cycle helmet or other head protection with Hövding?

    No.

  • Miscellaneous
  • I wear glasses, is that ok with Hövding?

    Yes.

  • What about shawls and scarves, can you wear them inside/outside the collar?

When the airbag is triggered, the pressure from the airbag splits open the upper seam of the collar, allowing the hood to inflate around your head. This means it’s important that you keep the area above this seam free and don’t cover it with a scarf or similar on top. But you can still wear a shawl or a scarf outside or inside your Hövding.

  • I often wear earrings, is that ok with Hövding?

Small earrings, such as studs, pearls etc. are fine. However, if you have big, dangly earrings, we recommend taking them off while you are cycling. Otherwise there’s a risk that they will fly off if they are hit by the airbag when it inflates around your head. Big rings in your ears where the ends are joined together can be hit by the airbag if it inflates and may hurt. So it’s better to take them off when you’re cycling.

  • Can I use headphones with Hövding?

Yes. Though you need to make sure they aren’t down round your neck over the seam that splits when the airbag inflates.
